We all are living in a society where more importance is given
to things than people. You know why, because today, there is so much emphasis
on the brand of clothes you’re wearing, phone you're using, car you’re driving, and whatever
you have in general. And these are actually those people who find happiness in
materials (they think acquiring “expensive products” make them the “happiest
person” on earth). Well, it’s completely a subjective approach. But you know
where the main problem lies? When ostentatious people start showing off to
others with an intention to demean them (specifically). This is the conspicuous consumption where
people tell you what they have (so-called brand), how much the cost of the
product is, etc. (that too when you don’t ask them). So, you’re getting info
free of cost. (Hahahahahah!)
Moreover, highly materialistic people believe that buying
things is necessary to achieve goals of life such as happiness, success, etc. (Do
you also believe the same?)
Materialism; is what you call a personality trait
Well, materialism is kinda natural
part of a human being but today society has literally brainwashed us to buy this
and that. And people are perpetuating it as if it’s the only thing to talk
about. Basically, society places more value on how much money, branded
products, cloths, and materials we have than our achievements. Unfortunately, people keep on acquiring and
demeaning others on the basis of materials. And I must have to say that these
are the hollow people who are always in the race to demean others. They
don’t see spiritual, intellectual, and cultural values but “materialism.”
In addition, people who display
materialistic values tend to be seen by others as having negative personality
traits like shallowness. Must remember - Fake showoff will cost you more. Being
original, people will value you more.
Does materialism really make you happy?
Materialism is a kind of addiction or a flaw in the society
we live in. According to the Journal of Consumer Research, “pleasure in the acquisition of new things is short-lived.” So, once it (short-lived happiness) is gone, you
will be addicted to acquiring more and more. Now the question is why to chase transitory happiness? Guys, materialism really harms and threatens the
environment, your nature for others, and makes you less emphatic. I feel materialistic people should make more authentic purchases, rather than trying to
impress others, this way they’ll be happier.
According to a study led by the University of Colorado at Boulder
psychology Professor Leaf Van Boven, "people who pursue happiness through material possessions are liked less by their peers than people who pursue happiness through life experiences."
Materialism is creating chaos in society, but how?
I don’t know whether you’ll agree with me or not, but
materialistic people are a threat to society. They’re responsible for creating
binaries in the society that ultimately brings aspiration in others to acquire
the same thing. And you know what, it creates chaos and destruction in others
because society is consistently brainwashing us to buy things that we actually
don’t want to spend money on. And this
is the main reason why the world is in chaos because “things are being loved
and people are being used.” You must remember “people were born to be loved and
things are created to be used.”
An alternate to materialism
To be very honest for highly materialistic people there is no
alternative because it is their life. These are the most insecure people whose
food won’t digest unless and until they flaunt off. You know what experts say, "you must choose to be around people who are less interested in material goods."
Guys, as you get older, you’ll realize that a 200 Rs. watch
and 2000 Rs. Watch both tell the same time. So, rather than focusing on materials
why not focus on acquiring knowledge, spiritual values, creating a
sophisticated environment around, and make a world a better peaceful place to
live in. Don’t you think imparting knowledge is much better than showing off so-called branded products?'
Well, I personally detest materialistic people and never get
swayed by them. Just understand the difference between needs and wants. Now the
ball is in your court make a wise decision!
